The Polish parliament's lower house, the Sejm, elected deputy of Civic Platform (PO) Bronislaw Komorowski as its new speaker on Monday.

Komorowski, 55, was former Polish minister of national defense between 2000 and 2001. From October 2005 he was a vice-speaker of the Sejm.

On Monday's voting in a plenary session of the Sejm, Komorowski's candidature, forwarded by PO was backed by 292 Members of the Parliament. Krzysztof Putra, the second candidate for the post, forwarded by the Law and Justice (PiS), received 160 votes.

Following the vote, Komorowski announced a break in the meeting until Tuesday afternoon, Polish PAP news agency reported.

The new Polish parliament was elected in Oct. 21, 2007. The largest opposite party PO got 209 seats in the 460-member Sejm, becoming the biggest winners of the elections.
