An Israeli airplane fired a missile at a group of militants in northern Gaza Strip early Saturday, wounding a militant, witnesses and medical sources said.

The gunman was moderately injured, said Adham Abu Selmia, spokesman for the medical emergency services.

The witnesses said that an Israeli drone hit the militants as the latter were preparing to fire a homemade rocket into southern Israel.

Over the past three days, Gaza militants fired nine rockets into southern Israel in a sudden surge of violence. Israel responded by targeting training sites for militant groups.

On Friday, Gaza's Hamas rulers deployed forces on outside cities to prevent the militants from attacking Israel, witnesses said.

No Palestinian groups have claimed responsibility for the rocket fire, which renewed three months after Hamas persuaded militant factions to halt attacks following a few days of cross- border violence that left 19 Palestinians dead.
