Uruguayan President Jose Mujica on Tuesday met with the U-17 national soccer team which finished second at the just-concluding World Cup Mexico 2011.

"Thanks for what you did. You are phenomena," Mujica told the players on Tuesday morning.

The national team arrived on Tuesday in Montevideo. They lost to hosts Mexico 2-0 in the final. However, it was the first time for a Uruguayan U-17 national team to reach a World Cup final.

The team and its technical staff were received in Montevideo by relatives and thousands of fans.

The team took a bus to go to Centenario stadium, where they received a homage.

"It is very exciting for everybody. This confirms the effort they have done after many time outside the country and far from their families," coach Fabian Coito said.

"I want to congratulate them and I hope that this experience of life serves them to be great men in the future, which is the most important," Coito said.
