Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez on Monday said he is recovering from the surgery he got last month in which a cancerous tumor was removed, the Venezuelan office of the Presidency said in a statement.

The statement, which followed an upbeat comment from Chavez posted on his account at the social network Twitter, said the Venezuelan president is complying with a "strict recovering process" following the surgery he received in the Cuban capital of Havana last month.

The Office of Presidency said that Chavez had sent "a message full of optimism through his social network Twitter account" in order to let the Venezuelan people know that he is recovering from the surgery rapidly.

"Hello! My dear compatriots. As of here 'Chavez The Patient' is in battle for a full return and recovery," the president wrote, referring to his name at the Twitter account.

The statement said that "as part of this important battle for life, President Chavez has changed his daily routine, which must begin early in the morning, to comply with his rehabilitation plan with martial strictness."

The 56-year-old Venezuelan leader spent most of June in Cuba where he first had surgery on June 10 in an operation where doctors removed a pelvic abscess. That operation was followed by a second round of surgery June 20 in which an unspecified cancerous tumor was successfully removed.

Chavez returned to Venezuela on July 4 and has since then resumed duties as head of state although he continues to be under strict medical orders.
