U.S. officials on Wednesday said the government has warned airlines that terrorists are considering using surgically implanted explosives in humans to carry out attacks.

Officials were quoted by TV network CBS as saying although there is no intelligence pointing to specific plots, airlines have been warned about such possibilities last week. U.S. authorities also passed on the intelligence to their counterparts abroad.

Such a threat is likely to come from overseas rather than domestically, officials were quoted as saying, and precautionary measures have been taken.

U.S. officials have been on high alert after al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in May. Transportation Security Administration said people traveling to the United States may experience additional screening at airports because of the threat.
