Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro said Monday he was glad to see that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has returned home after receiving cancer treatment in Cuba.

By returning to Venezuela, Chavez "has waged a decisive battle that will lead him and with him Venezuela, to a major victory," Castro wrote in his column published by official media.

He said during the Venezuelan leader's weeks-long stay in Cuba since June 8, Chavez received an urgent surgery on June 11 that removed a serious tumor located in his pelvis.

Castro also said Chavez has devoted all his energy to the revolution, "so it could be almost impossible that his health would not suffer any grief and that happened in recent months."

Chavez returned to Caracas earlier Monday from Havana, where he was seen off at the airport by Cuban leader Raul Castro, according to Cuban media.
