Brazil's Amazon rainforest deteriorated as 268 square kilometers were devastated in May, an increase of 144 percent year-on-year, a report said Thursday.
The report, released by Brazil's National Institute for Space Research and based on records of the satellite system Deter, indicates that 32 percent of the Amazon region could not be checked in May due to clouds.
The report registered a total of 880 square km of deforestation in the entire Amazon between January and May 2011.
Brazil committed itself to reducing deforestation in the Amazon rainforest region by 80 percent by 2020 at a UN climate change conference in 2009.
