Defense ministers from Colombia and Brazil on Friday met in the Colombian capital to start negotiations of a bilateral agreement on border security and the protection of natural resources in the Amazon region.

Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim was greeted by his Colombian counterpart Rodrigo Rivera with corresponding military honors.

Rivera, speaking to reporters before entering the meetings with Jobim, said the two countries share a 1,645 kilometers long border which is why Colombia and Brazil needs to establish "a kind of shield" which allows for better integration of the communities while at the same time creates a front against the crime.

"We have all kind of threats from transnational crime that puts the preservation of very important strategic resources at risk in the Amazon region" that Brazil and Colombia share, Rivera told reporters.

He said that within "the vast region" of the Amazon that comprises the largest tropical forest of the world all kind of crimes are being done including the production of illicit crops, mining exploitation, and a systematic depredation of flora and fauna which puts the conservation of the entire ecosystem at risk.

Jobim said that South America needs to develop a policy of cooperation for the entire sub-continent that has a defined strategy on how to go about the use and preservation of the resources.Brazil sees the agreement with Colombia as the first step toward creating a "model of understanding" which can be used with the other countries in the region, he said.
