Nearly 400 flights were cancelled and the average delay time were up to three hours on Sunday at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport due to a heavy storm, authorities said.

Heavy rain, high winds and lightning have been pounding Chicago area since Sunday morning. While the worst of the storms have passed, heavy raining prompted flood warning across northern Illinois, where Chicago is located.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm alert for most of the Chicago area along with flash flood warnings for counties including Lee, DeKalb and LaSalle.

There are also delays at Midway International, the other major airport in Chicago area.
