Cuba on Sunday strongly condemned the United States after Washington slapped sanctions on Venezuela's state-run oil company Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) for its transactions with Iran.

These sanctions are "attempts to divide" Latin America and the Caribbean and could spark "new conflicts," the Cuban Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"We have to denounce this aggression and we have to ask whether the U.S. is beginning a new escalation against the Bolivarian Revolution," it said.

"When Venezuela is attacked the same happens to Cuba," it said, adding that Cuba will take steps and work with other countries to restore the international law and stop the United States from violating it.

On Tuesday, the U.S. government imposed sanctions against seven foreign companies, including Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA and Israel's Ofer Brothers Group, which it said are involved in providing Iran with gasoline and other refined gasoline products.
