Mexico's President Felipe Calderon announced on Tuesday that the federal and state governments are doing "everything possible" to rescue 13 Mexican miners who were trapped in a coal mine in the northern state of Coahuila.

"We are vigilant and we are praying for them to be alive. We are working and we will continue to work and do everything possible and within our reach in order to ensure their rescue," Calderon told local press.

Calderon said his government was working closely with the state authorities in Coahuila.

The accident took place in Coahuila's Sabinas municipality after an explosion in the coal mine operated by the Spanish company BIMSA caused partial collapse of the mining structure, Mexico's Labor Minister Javier Lozano said earlier.

Causes of the explosion were still unclear, Lozano told reporters in the national capital, before flying to the scene of the accident. An unknown number of miners were hurt by the explosion.

"At this time we don't know if the miners trapped are dead or alive, it's very painful for us," Jesus Montemayor, local governor of Sabinas, told local television.
