A levee in Poplar Bluff, a city in Southeast Missouri, failed to hold up the flood in at least four locations on Tuesday, prompting the government to evacuate more people in the region.

The swollen river is threatening to burst through the structure and has already forced the evacuation of about 1,000 homes earlier on Tuesday, the local newspaper Star-Banner quoted a police official as saying.

If the levee broke, some 7,000 residents in and around Poplar Bluff would be displaced. The state governor has deployed the Missouri National Guard to Popular Bluff and Southeast Missouri to assist in flood relief.

The city has received 15 inches (38.1 centimeters) of rain in the latest four days after storms have ripped through parts of middle America. Besides, it is reported that three people were killed in Arkansas when floodwaters swept their vehicles off roadways.
