Obama heads to Chicago to start fund raising

U.S. President Barack Obama was playing different roles on Thursda as he conducted official White House business during the day before heading to his hometown Chicago to begin fund raising for his re-election bid.

According to White House schedule, Obama was meeting his co-chairmen of deficit commission before hosting the emir of Qatar, a Mideast ally. Shortly after the meeting, he will leave for Chicago for not one, but three campaign events for Democratic National Committee.

The president is the main attraction at three events in Chicago. The first two are smaller gatherings at two restaurants in the city. The third and largest event is being held at Navy Pier, along the shore of Lake Michigan, according to local media reports.

Obama announced his re-election bid on Monday April 4. His campaign says it received 23,000 contributions in the first 24 hours following Obama's re-election announcement, with nearly all of those donations in the amount of 200 or less. But the campaign is also targeting big donors to top his 2008 donations of 750 million.
