The Colombia army on Sunday said it had arrested two leaders of the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) guerilla group who are accused of being behind terrorist attacks against the civilian population.

The FARC leaders were arrested in two separate intelligence operations, the army said.

In an operation in the southern department of Valle de Cauca, the army arrested Carlos Leon alias "El Paisa", who is accused of ordering the attacks on six towns in the neighboring department of Cauca, army commander Victor Calderon told local press.

"This operation was conducted in collaboration between the 5th Brigade of the army and members of the secret service (DAS)," said Calderon, adding that the operation had been over a year in the planning.

In a separate operation in Colombia's east-central department of Meta the Colombian police arrested Gemner Lara alias "Lucio", when he was reported to come to the provincial capital to seek medical attendance.

The Colombian government had offered a reward worth between 54,000 dollars and 135,000 dollars for information that would lead to the arrest of the two FARC leaders.
