Obama thanks Danish PM for contribution to Afghanistan

U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday expressed thanks to visiting Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen for his country's contribution to the war effort in Afghanistan.

Obama said that they discussed "a wide range of" issues at the White House, but "of special importance has been our appreciation of the sacrifices that have been made by Danish troops in Afghanistan, and the extraordinary leadership that Denmark has shown as part of ISAF (International Security Assistance Force)."

More than 700 Danish combat troops as well as police and army training teams are serving in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan. NATO endorsed last week a transition plan that lists the first batch of provinces and districts to be turned over to Afghan control.

Rasmussen, who visited Danish troops in Afghanistan two weeks ago, said he is committed to Afghanistan till "the mission is accomplished" and has decided to increase aid to alternative crops to narcotics in Afghanistan. He stressed the need to fight the narcotic war in Afghanistan.
