Thirteen people were killed and six others seriously injured when a tour bus overturned on a highway in the U.S. state of New York on Saturday.

Local media reports quoted a New York Fire Department spokesman as saying that the accident took place at the New England Thruway in the Bronx near the Westchester County line at about 5:30 a.m. local time (1030 GMT).

The Worldwide Tour bus skidded and hit a sign pole on Interstate 95 at Exit 14 for the Hutchinson Parkway. The sign post sheared off the bus top along the window line.

The spokesman was quoted as saying that the bus was carrying 31 to 33 passengers, and that 11 of the passengers sustained minor injuries in the accident.
