A gunman has taken unknown number of people hostages at a bank in the U.S. state of North Carolina, media reported Thursday.

A man wearing a purple shirt and red pants held at least one hostage inside a Wachovia bank in Cary, North Carolina, Thursday afternoon, local media WRAL-TV reported.

The suspect had spoken to authorities by phone, and he had not demanded any money, the report said.

Customers and the suspect remained inside the bank about an hour after a robbery was initially reported, WRAL-TV quoted Susan Moran, a spokeswoman for the Town of Cary, as saying.
