Representatives from Central America and Mexico ended on Firday in Guatemala the 4th round of talks for the convergence of the valid trade agreements between the countries in the region, according to reports reaching here.

The Costa Rican Exterior Commerce Ministry said that the talks finished with important advances in the access to markets, rules of origin, customs procedures, trade easing and solution of controversies.

Mexico and Costa Rica held a bilateral meeting to discuss the request to improvement presented in the round hosted in December 2010.

"Both countries are aware of the need that this process has an added value on terms of access to markets and achieve a preferential tax treatment for some products excluded form the valid treaty," Costa Rica's director of Exterior Commerce Federico Valerio said.

Among the topics discussed in this round were the technical obstacles for trade, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, commercial defense, services and investment, public contracting, intellectual property and institutional aspects.

The round also allowed the coordinators of each country to reaffirm their commitment with the work plan defined in 2010, which established the end of these negotiations by the end of 2011.

They also established the schedule of the virtual and present meetings to be held by the technical teams in the first two quarters of this year.

The convergence process pretend to integrate all the Free Trade Agreements that Mexico and the so called "Maya Triangle" (Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador) have with Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

The next round of negotiation will be held from May 23 to 27 in Mexico City.
