Haitian ruling party's presidential candidate withdraws from elections

The Haitian Inite (Unity) Party's presidential candidate Jude Celestin on Wednesday announced in a statement his withdrawal from the electoral process.

The Inite (Unity) Party said in a statement that the decision was taken in order to favor Haiti's stability, according to information reaching here from Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.

"We request Inite's followers to keep the mobilization, but in a calmed way," the statement said.

The document was given to the press midday Wednesday, and it was signed by senators Joseph Lambert and Kelly Bastien, deputies Levaillant Louis Jeune and Joseph Moliere, and some officials in charge of Inite.

The statement was not signed by Celestin, but in the statement the Inite officials thanked him for "understanding the situation."
