Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has accepted the resignation of Defense Minister Jaime Ravinet, media reports said Thursday, quoting official sources.

Ravinet, who is the first minister to leave Pinera's cabinet, was quoted as telling the press that he made the decision for "personal, private reasons."

Local media said Ravinet has been at odds with a transparency commission over the investigation into a military purchase.

He was requested to explain the coast of a military bridge bought after the country was hit by a devastating earthquake in February. Ravinet brushed aside the request, saying such inquiries could make the military reluctant to provide aid in future disasters.
