Prison riot leaves 11 killed in northern Mexico

Eleven prisoners died in a prison riot in the northern Mexico city of Gomez Palacio in Durango state on Tuesday, according to a state prosecutor.

Alejandro Moreno said the riot happened at about 17:00 local time (2300 GMT).

Moreno said some prisoners fought with each other with weapons and the prisoners died were just put into the prison with charges of abduction.

Prior to the riot, local media said two law officials' corpses were found in the outskirts of Gomez Palacio. Investigators found bullet wounds on their bodies and could not make sure if there were any connections between the two cases.

There are 690 prionsers in the prison. Two deathly prison riots happened in Durango state in August 2009 and January 2010 respectively, which caused 40 deaths in total.
