The Mexican government Tuesday condemned Israel for demolishing a historic hotel at the heart of a Palestinian neighborhood in East Jerusalem to build 20 housing units for Jewish settlers.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry considered the move as an obstacle to restarting negotiations for the Middle East peace process and a violation of international law that does not help build a trust atmosphere, said the ministry in a statement.

"Mexico joins the international community and exhorts Israel, once more,to cancel their policy of settlements and occupation of the Palestinian territories, in order to give an opportunity to the Middle East peace process," said the ministry.

In order to build an apartment complex for Israeli families, Israeli bulldozers on Sunday demolished the Shepherd Hotel in East Jerusalem, which was built in the 1930s and was once home to then mufti of Jerusalem Haj Amin al-Husseini.
