U.S. State Department on Friday condemned Thursday's series of attacks in Iraq that targeted the country's Christians.

"We condemn the violence against Christians carried out overnight by terrorists in Iraq," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in a statement.

He said the United States commended Iraqi government for stepping up efforts to protect the country's Christian communities since the October 31 suicide bombing attack at a Baghdad church which killed dozens of Christian worshippers inside.

Toner called on Iraqi government to "redouble its efforts" to protect Christians and "apprehend the terrorists who are behind these acts."

A series of attacks targeting Iraqi Christians on Thursday in Baghdad left at least two killed and 14 others wounded.
