Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived here on Thursday for Brazilian President-elect Dilma Rousseff's inaugural ceremony scheduled for Saturday.

"He is here to participate in the inauguration and to personally thank President Lula and Foreign Minister Celso Amorim for all their support over the past ten years," Palestinian diplomatic representative in Brazil Ibrahim al-Zeben told reporters.

On Friday, Abbas would lay the cornerstone of the upcoming Palestinian embassy in Brasilia after Brazil recently recognized Palestine as an independent state.

Brazil has had a representative office in the West Bank city of Ramallah since 2004. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited Palestinian territories in March.
