Salvadorian Foreign Minister Hugo Martinez Tuesday stressed the importance of diplomatic ties with Cuba in a local newspaper.

The relations between El Salvador and Cuba are positive, Martinez said in a statement published by "Voces," noting that the bilateral trade and cooperation in cultural and educational sectors are increasing.

"We are looking for a level of relations with Cuba like the ones we have with other Latin American countries," the minister said.

"The important things are institutional relations and the continuity of these ties," he said.

El Salvador and Cuba re-established diplomatic relations on June 1, 2009, when Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes took office.
