A U.S. Border Patrol agent was fatally shot in a gunbattle with bandits in Southern Arizona bordering Mexico, authorities said on Wednesday.

The gunbattle erupted late Tuesday when border agents were trying to catch bandits who targeted illegal immigrants, according to the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC), which represents border agents.

Border agent Brian A. Terry, 40, was killed in the gunbattle and one of the suspects was wounded, said NBPC President T.J. Bonner.

No other border agents were injured, Bonner said.

The bandits target illegal immigrants for robbery as they sneak into the country, Bonner noted.

The fatal shooting shows that the border is still dangerous, he added.

"This is a sign that the politicians and bureaucrats are overly optimistic in their assessment that the borders are more secure now than at any point in our history. It showed just the opposite, " Bonner said.

Four suspects were arrested and a fifth was at large, according to Border Patrol spokesman Eric Cantu.
