Three male pedestrians were confirmed dead after they were struck by an Amtrak train in Commerce, southern California, Monday night, authorities said.

The remains of two men were found at the scene -- a trestle bridge over a major thoroughfare in Commerce, six miles (9.6 km) east of downtown Los Angeles -- after the accident took place shortly before 9:00 p.m. (0500 GMT) local time.

Several people were reportedly seen walking along the tracks on the bridge, over the 6700 block of Telegraph Avenue, when they were hit by a San Diego-Los Angeles Amtrak passenger train bound for Union Station in Los Angeles.

The death of the third male was later confirmed by local authorities. An investigation is underway.

No passengers or crew members on the train were injured in the accident, authorities said. At least 73 passengers were on board the Amtrak train.
