The Cuban National Assembly of People's Power Sunday demanded that the United States release the five Cubans imprisoned for almost 22 years.

In a statement the assembly said that "today is more than ever more necessary to demand the United States administration end this injustice and release those five Cubans."

The five Cubans were detained on Sept. 12, 1988 in Miami, the United States., where they were tracking terrorist activities against Cuba. In 2001, four of them were sentenced to life imprisonment and one to 15 years in jail on charges of spying.

The five have been facing "the biggest obstacles to exercise their rights and have been submitted to cruel punishments, including long isolated imprisonment and the prohibition to receive visitors," the statement said.

Over the last decades the Cubans were the only people who were "accused and convicted of spying in the United States, even people related to violent armed actions against the United States have not received such severe sentences," the statement added.

The assembly said "the fight for their release will continue" because "people, social and political organizations, professionals, governments and parliaments all over the world have joined to express their solidarity with this cause."
