Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro presented his book "Strategic Counter-Offensive" Friday at Havana University.

The book is the second volume of his memoirs about his guerrilla life against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and covers the years 1956 to 1959. During the presentation, Castro told participants about the research process of writing the book.

In the second volume, the former leader tells how the Rebel Army commanded by Camilo Cienfuegos and Ernesto Che Guevara invades other provinces before attaining a final triumph in January 1959.

Castro said he had worked on the manuscript while recovering from a serious illness in 2006. This was the time when Raul Castro took over as the country's leader.

The former leader's first volume of memoirs describes how his 300-strong army defeated the fierce offensive of 10,000 soldiers against him in the summer of 1958.

Fidel Castro, who turned 84 on Aug. 13, returned to public life in early July after retirement four years ago due to a complicated intestinal surgery.
