The Colombian authorities Monday issued a volcano alert for the south of the country.

According to a special report from the Colombian Institute of Geology and Mining, the alert warns of "a probable eruption in days or weeks" of Galeras Volcano in the province of Narino.

Some 7,000 people live in the risk area, and they've been told to evacuate to the shelters set up by rescue organizations.

"Staff of the observatory verified on Monday morning that the surface activity of the Galeras Volcano is low. Gas emission happened in low quantities and in a pulsatile way. There were no sulfuretted gas smells detected," the report said.

Two strong earthquakes occurred here Monday, but no casualties or economic losses were reported.

Galeras Volcano, 4,267 meters above sea level, is located 9 km away from Pasto, Narino's capital. It has been very active in recent years.
