Some 15,000 Nicaraguans on Saturday took part in an evacuation and rescue drill aimed at honing the country's crisis management capability in the event of an earthquake.

The event, which drew villagers, civil defense troops and relief agencies, sought to train people how to respond to an earthquake in and around the country's largest city, said army chief General Julio Aviles.

The drill was organized by the Civil Defense Army with backups from the Red Cross, fire fighters and government officials who combined to make available personnel and transport services for evacuation and rescue from houses and buildings.

The evacuation started from the north of the city and went through the seismically-risky neighborhoods in downtown Managua.

As many as 18 earthquake faults run through Managua, where a magnitude-7.5 earthquake killed 5,000 people and injured 20,000 others while leaving 250,000 people homeless in 1972.

A magnitude-7.8 earthquake killed 2,000 residents in Managua back in 1931.
