Cuban authorities confirm Fidel Castro's visit to scientific center

Official Cuban media on Sunday confirmed former leader Fidel Castro's visit to the National Center for Scientific Research (CNIC) in Havana on Wednesday, his first public appearance since 2006.

Five photos of the 83-year-old former leader, taken by one of his sons, photographer Alex Castro, showed Castro was dressed in a white sportswear, smiling and talking with the director and several workers of the CNIC.

The pictures were first posted on two Cubans blogs and then spread this weekend.

Castro handed over power to his younger brother Raul Castro in 2006 due to an intestinal surgery. Since then, he has not participated in any public events, but has continued to wield influence as the first secretary of the Communist Party, writing articles on important issues for state media.
