Unemployment rate remains high in California of U.S.

The jobless rate in California of the United States was 12.4 percent in May, down from 12.5 percent in April but above the May 2009 rate of 11.3 percent, the state Economic Development Department (EDD) reported on Friday.

A total of 2.28 million people were out of work in the state, down slightly from 2.29 million in April, according to the EDD.

In Los Angeles County, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 12.3 percent in May, up from a revised 12.2 percent in April.

The 12.3 percent unemployment rate was above the 11.4 percent rate in May 2009, according to the EDD.

Total nonfarm employment increased by 6,500 jobs in Los Angeles County between April and May to reach nearly 3.8 million.

The government sector posted the largest job increase over the month, up by 8,900 jobs.

A total of 599,000 people were unemployed in May in Los Angeles County, which has a labor force of about 4.9 million.

Nationwide, the unemployment rate was 9.7 percent in May, down from 9.9 percent in April, but higher than the May 2009 rate of 9. 4 percent.
