The quake occurred just before 8:08 p.m. PTD and was centered at Borrego Springs, 90 miles (144 km) northeast of San Diego on the U.S.-Mexican border.
Some residents living as far as the Orange County near Los Angeles reported feeling the quake.
The quake was also felt in other parts of Southern California like La Habra, Irvine, Costa Mesa, Dana Point and Lake Forest.
A San Diego County sheriff's dispatcher described the quake as a "quick jolt" and said no one had called in to report damage or injuries.
Borrego Springs has seen thousands of aftershocks from the magnitude 7.2 quake in northern Mexico on April 4.
