The new head of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has every confidence that his operation, in combination with forces of Canada and the United States as well as the Canadian police, can secure the sky for the G8 and G20 summits in Ontario, Canada later this month.
Admiral James Winnefeld made the comments Monday on his first two-day visit to Canada as the new commander of NORAD and the U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM).
"The role of NORAD in G8 and G20 summits is to do what we always do and that is to provide for the air sovereignty security in Canada and the U.S.," Winnefeld said at Canada's National Defense Headquarters.
At a joint press conference with his host, Chief of the Defense Staff Gen. Walt Natynczyk, Winnefeld said that NORAD will be protecting a very important piece of ground from potential threats which would involve surveillance, the assessment of potential threats and the intentions of aircraft that may be entering the airspace around these events.
Security for the summits has been a hot topic in Ottawa since the government's bill for security has topped 933 million Canadian dollars.
