Arizona governor Jan Brewer signed the bill SB 1070 into law last month. The legislation, which goes into effect at the end of July and targets those who are in the nation illegally, authorizes police to stop and interrogate those about their immigration status. People who were found to be illegal aliens can be arrested and imprisoned.
The law has aroused a strong backlash from the spectrum of the American society. It has also become a hotly debated issue in electoral campaigns including the Republican gubernatorial primary in California.
The survey of 1,506 registered voters was conducted between May 19 and 26 for The Times and the University of Southern California College of Letters, Arts and Sciences by the Democratic polling firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and the Republican firm American Viewpoint.
The margin of error was plus or minus 2.6 percentage points for the overall sample and slightly larger for smaller breakdowns.
