Commander-in-Chief Freddy Padilla de Leon said that 12 of the injured were in a critical condition.
"There is nothing clear yet, but the most possible reason for it is that it was an accident. A soldier said he saw the grenade dropping accidentally when a soldier left the bathroom," Padilla told reporters.
Preliminary reports said the explosion occurred on Saturday when the Fast Display Forces were deployed in the Military Fort of Tolima.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation, a military statement said.
