Mexico urged to establish an effective mechanism to address international migration issues, particularly to protect the interests of migrants, at a regional summit Thursday.

International migration is the new "phenomenon in the 21st century" which requires a gentle, useful and adequate mechanism to address, commissioner of the Mexican National Institute of Migration (INM) Cecilia Romero told the 15th Regional Summit on Migration (CRM) in Tapachula city, Chiapas state in southeast Mexico.

The regional meeting is being attended by representatives from 11 countries, including Canada and the United States.

During the meeting, Mexico will introduce some of its positive experiences in migratory management, including achievements in protecting children of migrants and providing humanitarian aid to undocumented immigrants.

On Thursday the Regional Network of Civil Organizations on Migration, which has various branches in countries in the region, made a pronouncement denouncing the SB1070 Law approved in the U.S. state of Arizona, which seeks to crack down on illegal immigration.

The organizations said in a statement that "the recent anti-immigrants law in Arizona promoted hate, racism and discrimination against migrants."

The Regional Network of Civil Organizations on Migration demanded the representatives at the summit establish a joint mechanism to protect migrants.
