Men convicted of murder in Brazil prison riot draw stiff sentences

Two men accused of involvement in the killings of 27 rival gang members during a 2002 prison riot were sentenced to lengthy prison terms on Friday.

Michel Alves das Chagas and Anselmo Garcia de Almeida were both convicted on 27 murder charges. Michel Alves das Chagas was sentenced to486 years, 18 years for each person killed, while Anselmo Garcia de Almeida drew 445 years, 16 and a half years for each death.

Another 14 accused killers still face prosecution.

A group of 16 inmates killed 27 rival gang members during the Jan. 1, 2002, riot at the Urso Branco prison in Rondonia State. Five of the victims were decapitated.
