He also took the opportunity to thank Venezuela's support in Russia's fight against terrorism.

This is Putin's first visit to Venezuela. He arrived at the Simon Bolivar International Airport, some 50 km from Caracas, on Friday at 6:20 a.m. local time (1050 GMT).

His formal meeting with Chavez was held at Miraflores Palace, the Venezuelan presidential headquarters.

The two leaders also visited a Russian navy ship which arrived in La Guaria in Venezuela's Vargas state a few days ago.

The Russian leader also paid homage to Liberator Simon Bolivar, Venezuela's founding father, at his mausoleum and was named an honorary citizen of the Venezuelan capital of Caracas.
