Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon said in Chelsea on Monday that the Arctic Ocean coastal states have unique roles and responsibilities for the stewardship of the ocean.
Cannon said at a news conference for the Arctic Ocean Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Willson House of Chelsea, Quebec that the five coastal states of the Arctic Ocean were "in a unique position to address new opportunities and challenges in the region. "
He said that the leadership of the five countries expected to be shown by their citizens and northern inhabitants involved consultation, collaboration and the settlement of disputes with their neighbors in some cases.
He also said that the five states were cooperating in the scientific and technical work needed "to delineate the outer limits of our respective continental shelves," as they knew the potential and the magnificent treasure of the North.
"We are committed to doing so within the extensive international legal framework applying to the Arctic Ocean," he noted.
New potential public safety challenges, which included search and rescue, emergency preparedness and disaster management, were rising due to increasing access to the region caused by climatic changes, he added.
