One dead, 55 detained during Concepcion curfew

Chilean Police said on Monday that one person died and 55 others were detained during the first night of curfew in Concepcion, one of the most affected cities by the Saturday earthquake.

According to a Police report, in Chiguayante locality neighboring Concepcion, one man died after being shot while he was walking in the street with a friend.

The incident occurred on Sunday 9:30 p.m. local time (2430 GMT) when the curfew issued by the Chilean authorities was already enforced to stop the rapine and violent actions.

Police chief in the zone, General Eliecer Solar, said that they were investigating the incident.

The disturbance occurred on Sunday night during the curfew were expected by the authorities.

Chilean Interior Vice Minister Patricio Rosende said that the people were detained for violating the curfew and committing other violent activities.

According to Rosende, the first day of curfew, from 9 p.m. local time (2400GMT) to 6 a.m. local time (0900 GMT) on Sunday, was almost "calm" with only some "minor incidents."

The Chilean government issued a state of emergency for the regions of Maule and Bio Bio, the most affected by the earthquake, so as to create favorable conditions for increasing the amount of troops at the affected zones.
