Uruguay's new President Jose Mujica said on Monday that his government would continue with the "successful" policy of former president Tabare Vazquez.

Mujica, who was sworn into office earlier in the day, gave a conciliation message and promised to show policy continuity from the first left-wing government of Uruguay.

"Time ago we learnt that the battle for everything or nothing is the best way for nothing to change and everything to stagnate," said Mujica, stressing the importance of a political coalition.

"We want to change the reality, to improve security, employment, health ..." Mujica said.

Mujica, 74, is the second left-wing president of Uruguay. He won a presidential run-off with 53 percent of the vote in November 2009.

Mujica said: "We want those changes that can be touched with the hands, which do not affect the statistics but the real life of the people."

He added that the country has a tradition of respect, but " maybe it is time to pass from tolerance to collaboration."
