U.S. President Barack Obama hosted Spanish King Juan Carlos I in the White House on Wednesday, and the two discussed a wide range of common concerns from climate change to Middle East peace.

President Obama "highlighted his interest in strengthening our partnership with Spain as we seek to confront common challenges, including the global economy, climate change, terrorism and Afghanistan," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs in a statement.

The two leaders also discussed the situation in the Middle East and important issues in Latin America and the Caribbean, including Cuba and ongoing relief efforts in Haiti, said the statement.

Spain, the EU Presidency in the first half of 2010, is one of the major contributors to the NATO mission in Afghanistan and has strong bilateral relations with the United States.
