U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg arrived here Wednesday to discuss economic cooperation and the fight against drugs.

Steinberg traveled from Lima to Tarapoto in the afternoon to see the promotion of alternative crops, a U.S.-supported program aimed at eradicating the planting of coca leaves.

Steinberg is scheduled to meet Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde and other officials on Thursday.

Peru is the world's second largest producer of cocaine, just after Colombia, according to UN figures.

Steinberg arrived in Peru after concluding his visit to Colombia, where he met President Alvaro Uribe.
