Brazil would release 46 million U.S. dollars for emergency reconstruction and relief in the state of Rio de Janeiro, which has been affected by heavy rains, a senior official announced Thursday.

The Brazilian Minister of National Integration, Geddel Vieira Lima, said the money would be released to a coastal city in the southwest of Rio de Janeiro state, Angra dos Reis, where heavy rains have killed at least 52 people.

He added that the money would be used to rebuild homes destroyed by landslides, relocate families living in unsafe areas and recover the slopes, especially in the most affected areas.

In the state of Rio de Janeiro as a whole, heavy rains have caused more than 70 deaths within about a week.

Governor of Rio de Janeiro Sergio Cabral noted that the announcement only referred to emergency reconstruction and relief efforts. Moreover, on Jan. 13, the state would present President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva with a set of measures for Angra dos Reis and other cities of the state battered by heavy rains.
