One soldier died and two others were seriously injured on Wednesday when a military helicopter crashed in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, the Mexican Defense Department said.

The Bell 212 helicopter, carrying nine soldiers and one officer, crashed early Wednesday due to a mechanical problem, the ministry said.

The soldiers were to be deployed in the region as part of an operation against drug trafficking.

Second sergeant Dan Neftali Botello Ramos died in the crash, local newspapers reported. The officer and six soldiers suffered minor injuries.

The Mexican government has made it a priority to fight drug-related crimes and organized crime in recent years, sending troops and federal police to the nation's most violent areas, including Guerrero, which have seen a rise in violence lately with dozens of people killed.
