Seven people have been killed and at least 12 wounded in a shooting at Fort Hood Army Base in Killeen, Texas, U.S. army officials said Thursday afternoon.

The incident took place at the sports dome, also known as the soldier readiness area, a local TV station reported.

There were two suspects in the shooting, officials said. One gunman was in custody and a second was still at large.

"At this point we are looking for the other shooter," said Ford Hood Spokesman Jamie Posten.

U.S. President Barack Obama has been informed of the shooting, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters.

FBI agents are headed to the scene to assist, said Erik Vasys, spokesman for the FBI office in San Antonio.

A message on the Fort Hood Web site said, "The post is on lockdown. This is not a drill. Please stay inside. It is an emergency situation."

The shooting prompted the base and nearby schools to order a lockdown.

Fort Hood is the Army's largest U.S. post, with about 40,000 troops.
