The Honduran Permanent Commission of Contingency (Copeco) on Monday issued a green alert in 10 departments in the country due to strong rains.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Copeco said the residents of those departments must pay attention to the rise of river levels and take necessary precaution and protection measures.
The departments under alert are Choluteca and Valle in the south; Francisco Morazn in the center; La Paz in the northwest; Intibuca, Lempira, Ocotepeque, Copan and Santa Barbara in the west; and Cortes in the north.
Inhabitants in the west of the country must be alerted to possible landslides due to the water saturation level in the soil, the Copeco said.
The strong rains in the country were caused by a tropical wave that brought precipitation of between 40 mm and 80 mm per day.
The Copeco also urged the emergency committees across the country to get prepared in accordance with the green alert procedures.
