Brazilian congressmen congratulate Rio de Janeiro

Brazilian lawmakers congratulated on Friday Rio de Janeiro after the International Olympic Committee announced that Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic Games, considering it as a historic victory for Brazil.

From his home city of Sao Luis, in the Maranhao state, the President of the Senate, Jose Sarney, said that the attributes of the nature of the "marvellous city" allowed to beat big cities like Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo.

"Nature does Rio de Janeiro one of the most beautiful places in the world. But we also won the Olympics by affection, hospitality and generosity of Rio's inhabitants. These characters are also the soul of the Brazilian people," he noted.

Through its Web platform Twitter, the leader of the Workers Party in power in Brazil, Aloizio Mercadante, emphasized the opportunity that the announcement represents for Rio.

"For the first time after more than a century, the Olympics will be in Rio, Brazil. As President Lula da Silva said, 'yes, we can'", he said.

Rosalba Ciarlini, Senator of the opposition Democrat Party (DEM), recalled that before the Olympics, Brazil will receive the World Cup 2014.

"Congratulations, Brazil, World Cup 2014 and Olympics 2016. Nowwe need to roll up our sleeves to work seriously and make nice Olympics," she said.

Some political parties leaders also warned of the need to take careful of planning and expenditure in the preparation procedure.

Congressman Alfredo Kaefer, from the Social Democratic Party (PSDB), noted that the same effort put into the candidacy of Rio must be made in solving social problems of the country.

"We must take the same energy spent on the Olympics to make high quality education. This is investment in future generations", he said.
